Scholar's Compass Leadership Academy (SCLA) is a private, nonprofit high school microschool serving grades 9 through 12 in Gary, Indiana — a division of the National African American Literacy Institute (NAALI).
We didn't set out to build a smaller version of a traditional high school. We set out to build a place where scholars are greeted by name, trusted with real responsibility from day one, and surrounded by mentors who are genuinely invested in where they're headed. Cohorts stay small on purpose. Relationships stay close on purpose.
And every scholar leaves with more than a diploma — a body of work, a network, and a clear bearing on what's next.
It's all grounded in Human Dignity Literacy™ — a framework built from decades of turnaround leadership in urban public education, applied here from day one instead of retrofitted after the fact.
The daily student experience is further strengthened by the Pathways to College Success Blueprint, an evidence-informed framework that intentionally develops the thinking patterns, learning behaviors, decision making, self-management, and leadership practices students need to thrive in college, careers, entrepreneurship, and life.
This isn't a school where leadership is a unit you study in October. It's the pace of the place — every year adding more trust, more ownership, and more proof of what a scholar can build. Scholars move, and the school moves right alongside them.
Scholars arrive to a place that already knows their name. Small advisory circles replace anonymous homerooms; every 9th grader is paired with a staff mentor who'll walk with them all four years, not just one semester. Along the way, scholars develop the thinking, learning, communication, and self-management practices that prepare them to solve problems, persevere through challenges, collaborate effectively, and take ownership of their future — then complete their first community-based project and open a personal portfolio that grows with them straight through graduation.

Founding Leadership, SCLASCLA's founding leadership brings a career built across scientific research, K–12 classrooms, and district-level turnaround leadership — including six years leading a major urban school district through one of the strongest academic turnarounds in the region, plus deep working relationships across city and government municipalities.
SCLA is where that career converges: a school built to prove, in real time, what happens when scholars are trusted with real leadership before anyone tells them they're ready for it.

Admissions follows three steps: Application, Interview, and Registration. Once we receive your application, our team will reach out to schedule an interview with your family, and registration follows once your scholar's spot is confirmed.
Yes. SCLA is provisionally accredited by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).

Beyond rigorous academics, every scholar intentionally develops the thinking, leadership, decision making, communication, and self-management skills that employers, colleges, and entrepreneurs consistently identify as essential for long-term success. These experiences are supported through the Pathways to College Success Blueprint. It's a microschool by design, not a smaller copy of a traditional high school.
Yes. SCLA is a site-based, in-person school — not an online or virtual program. Scholars attend in person at our campus at 201 West Ridge Road in Gary, Indiana.
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 8. Enrollment for 2026–27 is open now, and because cohorts stay intentionally small, we encourage families to start their application as early as possible.
